About
Benjamin H. Chen, MD CM, CCFP, CSPQ, FRCPC, FACP
Dr. Chen received his medical training at McGill University. He is dually certified in family medicine and in internal medicine. He speaks English, French, and Mandarin (Chinese).
He is a community-based consultant general internist: a type of “generalist-specialist” who takes a holistic approach to adults with complex multimorbidity or undifferentiated illnesses. Over the years, he has provided direct care and consultation support at emergency departments, critical care units, inpatient wards, cardiorespiratory rehabilitation centres, and outpatient clinics — in academic, urban, and rural settings. He advocates for the well-being of patients and healthcare workers; for generalism, for an enhanced model of collaborative care within a medical neighbourhood, and for the social determinants of health. And he takes a trauma-informed approach to helping patients with their self-management of chronic diseases.
His academic roles have spanned the continuum of medical education, including past roles at Queen’s University as General Internal Medicine (PGY4) Program Director. As the founding Director of Medical Education Technology, he led the team that developed the learning, teaching, and curriculum management platform that has evolved into the international Elentra Consortium. He has also served as President of the Canadian Society of Internal Medicine and editorial board member of the Canadian Journal of General Internal Medicine. His awards include a Certificate of Merit from the Canadian Association for Medical Education.
Dr. Chen is currently a Medical Advisor at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario and continues to provide general internal medicine consultations in and around Kingston, Ontario. He is also an adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at Queen’s University and an Internal Medicine Examination Board member for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He is current enrolled in the International Masters for Health Leadership program at McGill University’s Desautels Faculty of Management.
